Here i am going to discuss about some incidence of the past in the lives of great physicians that led to the inventions of the present day.
THE STETHESCOPE:
Its a basic tool that every medical practitioners and doctors used to have around their necks.
It was invented by a Person called Laennec… many of the persons in medical profession knew this … but the fact is he had this idea from the children who were playing around his house. he saw boys to put their ears to one end of a long wood piece and another boy used to scratch the other end of the wood with a pin… inspired by seeing this Laennec invented the stethescope. Till his invention, doctors used to listen to heart beats and sounds of respiration only by putting their ears directly on the chest of the patients.
THE SURGICAL GLOVES:
In 1890 – William Halsted [American Surgeon] requested Goodyear Rubber Company to manufacture a thin rubber glove for his fiancee. His fiancee was a nurse and she developed allergies while handling sterilizing solutions. This led to the manufacturing of the first surgical glove. Goodyear company was the first to do this, after which all medical persons started to wear a glove.
SHOCK TREATMENT:
Medically known as the Electro Convulsive Therapy ECT is not a thing of the present day. It is a technique that has orginated 2000 years ago. electricity was not yet used at that time, then how come they gave a shock…. the patients were immersed in a water tank with a tropedo fish or the electric ray fish. These fishes produce a staggering 500V of electric charge. This method was used to treat joint pain, muscle pain and paralysis.
THE CLINICAL TECHNIQUE OF PERCUSSION:
It is a clinical technique that involves tapping over the chest wall to find where the lungs are clear or any disease is present. This technique was first introduced by Auenbrugger [Austrian physician] in the year 1761. Being a son of a inn keeper, he used to tap the wine barrels in his cellar to find the level of the wine. he slowly improvised this technique and used it in his practice for identifying any lung disorders.
